Mrs. Cowger’s K-4 Class
A-BEKA CURRICULUM
The following is a brief description of the various areas of our
program:
Bible:
At this time the class gathers as a group to start the school day.
Bible time includes pledges to the flags, and to the Bible,
worship/praise songs, memory verses, prayer time and the Bible
lesson.
Phonics:
The children are given the opportunity to learn the shape and sound
of each letter of the alphabet. The K4 children will learn to
recognize vowels, consonants, blends and sounds they make.
Your child will be given the opportunity to learn to sound one and
two vowel words. In addition to reviewing the above, the K5 children
will learn special sounds and sentence comprehension.
Numbers:
The teacher instructs in the recognition of new numbers and in
understanding the concepts of numbers. The children are given
the opportunity to work with manipulatives.
Writing:
The children are given sample letters to see the exact formation of
the letters in the size they are to write them. They will
begin with dotted examples to trace, and then graduate to writing
their own letters.
Language:
The teacher will encourage children to think and to strengthen their
vocabulary and language skills. The children will enjoy games
and activities about animals, people and places.
Calendar & Weather:
The children will assist the teacher with learning the date and
local weather. This will also include learning the months of
the year.
Art & Music:
Art time is designed to give children the opportunity to enjoy art
while developing the motor skills needed to draw, color, cut and
paste. Music is a fun and enjoyable part of the day. The
children will experience music activities in their classroom as well
as with the teacher.
Skills Development or Readiness Skills:
This is a fun time for strengthening listening, eye-hand
coordination, visual perception, thinking, fine motor coordination,
and writing skills. The children will enjoy a wide variety of
activities.
Playtime:
During playtime the children will be given the opportunity to choose
various play activities. Gross motor skills/games are played
outside. Free playtime will be spent inside during inclement
weather.
Social Studies:
The K5 children will be introduced to helpers within the community,
beginnings of American history, interesting features from countries
around the world, and simple geography.
Science:
The K5 children will be introduced to God’s World. This is to
stimulate their young interests in the world that God has made for
them. They will see that God has a plan for each part of His
creation and that He not only made each living thing, He cares for
it.
